The old school was a self-made institution, a fully autonomous educational institution that formulated its objectives, created its educational curricula, founded its values, innovated and diversified its teaching methods and possessed the right of choosing its teachers and students.
In today’s world, the school exists in a formal system with a hierarchical managerial system that resembles a centralized management style. It works according to General regulations that cannot be broke even for the sake of development, with some exceptions that are negligible in collaborative education, an education that despite its high costs is no better than formal education.
The role of the school is not only to teach students the contents of the subjects, but also to develop important aspects, especially the love of knowledge, by training them to read, do research, and to develop their abilities to think consciously. The School enables them to build their abilities to ask questions, and to develop skills beyond general knowledge, like the methods of critical thinking, and the ability to solve problems by looking rationally, objectively and impartially, also training them to cooperate and enable them to practice and work within a team in order to build their communication skills with their surroundings, which eventually enable them to seek what’s beyond Cognitive knowledge.
Students of general education in any Arab country receive the same books, and are obliged to study information and knowledge from these books. Meanwhile, the skills and knowledge conveyed by those books do not take into consideration individual differences in all aspects, and do not consider the different environments in the country. This is a scene that gets repeated every day and it represents something that can no longer be ignored or overlooked.
Wouldn’t it be better to give students the right to select some intermediate and secondary subjects that would suit their individual orientation, thus enhance their abilities?
